Finally Spring

Looks like spring has sprung. Its a loud night with all the spring peepers. The birds are making nest and protecting their eggs. We have one robin at our front door. The grass is green and spring flowers provide us with much color. Was getting real tired of the white stuff. We still need some rain to wash down all the winter mess.

Had a chance to start some flower and vegetable plants in the greenhouse. Still have 4 flats of seedlings in the shed under heat. Next week they'll go outside. The greenhouse is working out very nicely. I was able to start a different variety of seeds That friends from The Bayou Gardener sent me. Still need to run water and electric out there.

Soon I'll be tilling up the garden and getting the plants in the ground. Need to get the fence up soon as the woodchuck is all ready back for the season.

A few pictures of the greenhouse plants. I'll update in a couple of weeks.

Interesting Evening

Last night about 11:30 p.m. I took the pups out for their last walk. The night was different. Quiet you could hear different sounds if you really listened. The breeze was warm and pine needles were falling from the trees, the ice melting from the roofs and the snow actually melting away. Rosie stealthy walking with here nose in the air, catching every scent possible. As we neared the rear of the yard the owl, her characteristic  cry.  Amazing how we both stood and listened like there was nothing around to disturb  us.
This morning lot of the snow was gone and we were both back to reality. As they saying goes a day makes a difference its true.

HAPPY NEW YEAR

Welcome to 2013. The sun is out very bright making a pretty snow covered landscape. Yesterday took the snowblower out into the yard and make some walking trails for the dogs and to the greenhouse. Put the new thermometer in and it was in the high 40's. Not too awful much going on outside yet, just keeping up with the snow we have. It snowed last week more than we received all last winter. Hopefully we'll get a January thaw. Then its off to the wood pile to do some cutting and splitting before I get busy with growing transplants. Not to much else going on. I hope everyone enjoyed their holiday season.  Happy New Year to you all.  A few pictures to put you in the winter season here in central New York.

A nice blue sky to offset the snow

Done with Firewood

Finally loaded the last trailer for the year and brought it up to the house. Just as I got the hang of it I was finished. Took me 1 1/2 hours to load and a little over 3 to unload. Now can sit back and enjoy the warmth. In January I'll start cutting up the logs for next year. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving and holiday season ahead. Before you know it , it will be time to start the seeds for next year's garden. New vegetable varieties and flowers to be added.

Green House Finished

Here it is November and I finally finished the greenhouse.  Had to wait on parts and actually waiting on the vent window. Bought it from Growers  Supply. Was easy enough to do, too many parts and at times you needed six hands. Had to bring in some help for a portion of the job. Here are a few pictures to show you some of the steps.

The base which I built it on.
My helper Oscar putting the mulch for the floor.

A partial of the finished product.
The finished product.
My friend Ozie who was my extra hands when I needed them.

Today it was quite warm in there. After I finish loading the firewood for the house I'll build some benches inside to put the flats on. I have the conduit in for the electricity and a pie for water. That won't be done until next summer though. Just going simple with a lighting and power circuit. A few light a small fan and maybe a small heater for those cold spring mornings. Also a quick thank you to Margaret and Matthew for their time and help with the vent window.

Watermelons and Pumpkins

As another growing season comes to an end I would like to comment on a couple  different things I tried this year. Seeds were given to me by members of The Bayou Gardner Forum.

Tobacco grew well nice small leaves but never did get tall. Ended up pulling it out and putting it out for yard waste.

Watermelon was another story. Tried different seeds any got 3  varieties. One red round, one long yellow and one long pink . Took awhile but they came out good.

The pumpkins were plentiful. Actually started planting them for Oscar and just continued on. Usually send some with Sara to decorate her classroom.

Below are some pictures to show you what I mean. Hope you enjoy them.If you go to the comments section you can subscribe to future postings.

New Puppies

Well we finally did it. We picked up our new puppies right before Labor day. Sure is a bit different around the house now. Actually its not that bad, a little chewing here and there puppy fights and the usual stuff. Glad I'm retired though. Missed all this fun when I was working.Found these in Chenago Forks raised by a young family with children. Reminds me of our puppy days. Enjoy the pictures.
Meet Rosie and Rylee.
