Garlic and onions

The garden has had its final tilling and two crops have been planted. Planted 100 feet of garlic and 80 feet of sweet onion seed. Not sure how the onions will do but the garlic should be ok. As Kate and I went out this morning you can see a few small onions starting and some garlic. With this snow we should start to freeze soon.

Now that the garden is complete I'll be starting back up at the woodpile.Good winter project, a couple hours a day should have next years wood ready.

Now that its over I would say I enjoyed it. Time well spent. Looking forward to building the greenhouse this coming year. Might even start a few different types of flowers. Take care and thanks for stopping by.

Its been a good harvest

The year didn't get off to such a great start  but I ended up with some good produce. Its time to put the garden away for its winter nap. Margaret has been mulching leaves for me so I can restore some organic matter back into the soil. She is good on that tractor,makes a row of leaves that are easy for me to handle.

The old plants are being removed and some compost added. I remove the plants just in case there may have been some disease, don't want to carry it in the garden next year.

The garden has been tilled and more leaves added.Will go over this two or three times to break up the leaves so they decompose better. L eaves are very good as they contain micronutrients drawn from the depths of the earth.

When I first started this soil was completely sand. It sure has improved.


In the next posting we will discuss the winter crop i'm going to try.

Peppers and potatoes

 The plants had some excellent fruit  as you can see. After digging a few feet I was amazed how big the potatoes wereFilled that basket a few times.

Took a few peppers in to the village to NICHOLS were Mike Hennigan let me use the produce scale.
Good to have a local grocery store.

Let us not forget the scarecrow, even though the chucks ate the squash.

 Finally getting some tomatoes peppers and green beans.

A few more peppers but the tomatoes are really starting to produce.  Once the cherry tomatoes come in your picking every few hours it seems. Have to get them before they split.                                                

The ultimate summer sandwich. Fresh bread, mayo,salt and pepper and sun ripened red tomato. Nothing like an upstate New York sumer.

                                                                                                                          

Plants are bearing fruit now

In the following pictures we will check on the progress of the plants.

Tomatoes cluster type 4 to 6 ounce.

Large 8 to 12 ounce size.

The all you can eat sweet cherry tomatoes while your picking them.

These were suppose to be sweet frying peppers but ended up on the hot side.

The peppers were planted next. Had many varieties red,yellow,orange,diamond green,red cherry and a few hot ones  also. The hot ones were seeds given to me by the MAYOR and CINDY JONES on the forum. All toll there were 138 plants,not as many as last year. The chocolate ones never did come up so great. They started but never grew. Not root bound my any means. Just a hard one to start. Had this problem past two years.

After the peppers were planted along came some pink eye cow peas. Following the peas were  yellow tomatoes and three hills of pumpkins. They were planted on the edge and took over the lawn. Everything is planted now so next we'll check on the progress  in the next posting.
